Zakynthos
Zakynthos is one of the Greek Ionian Islands located off the west coast of the Peloponnese. The island is one of the greenest and most beautiful and boasts some superb sandy beaches
You may even find yourself swimming alongside the beautiful loggerhead sea turtles which use the soft sand of the south coast beaches as their nesting grounds.
The tourists themselves will ultimately have to take responsibility for the demise or survival of these delightful creatures. Rules such as the ban on visiting designated areas from dusk till dawn during the breeding season should be strictly observed. That is why the National Marine Park was established on the island for their protection, in the Bay of Kalamaki.
A favorite island excursion is a boat ride to the Blue Caves in the north where the sea is so clear and such an exquisite color that your skin appears blue when you swim in it. The famous Shipwreck Beach, at the north western tip of the island, is also on most excursion boat schedules.
Zakynthos is an island with a unique culture. It met great spiritual flourishing and gave birth to great personalities distinguished in fine arts, literature, poetry and more.
It is the island of the serenade and the operetta. Here, all emotions are dressed with notes. So how can you not worship Zakynthos? It has it all. History, sights, imposing massifs, verdant forests and fertile plains, endless sandy beaches and the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea. Together, they embody the summer dream of every imaginable traveler. Visit Zakynthos and discover paradise on earth.
Kalamaki, a peaceful resort next to Laganas, is only 5 km from the town and harbor of Zakynthos (Zante), a small village built along the beach.
The beach at Kalamaki has a very fine sand and crystal-clear waters. The sandy beach is also a reproduction place for the famous Caretta sea turtle.
Kalamaki, owing to this great beach, is a magnet to many tourists during the summer and one of the main resorts of the island.
Restaurants
You will find many excellent restaurants and taverns at Kalamaki, offering menus from the traditional Greek cuisine, but also from the English, Chinese, and Italian ones. Even if you like fast-food, you won´t miss it! Furthermore, some of the restaurants and the taverns offer live Greek music shows with traditional singing and dancing.
The beaches
Kalamaki forms a natural extension of Laganas beach, with prefect, golden sand and clean waters. You may rent umbrellas and sunbeds to use at the beach, and there are taverns and restaurants close to the beach. Most of the people prefer the middle of the beach, but if you walk a little, you may discover great, quiet spots. Remember, the sandy beach at Kalamaki is also the reproduction place of the famous Caretta sea turtle. The reproduction season coincides with the vacation season. During July and August, the female turtles come ashore to bury their eggs about 50 cm in the sand. The warm sand causes the eggs to hatch and the baby turtles emerge 8 weeks later, immediately heading to the moonlit sea. So, if you want to spend some time at the beach, you must be careful not to disturb the nests with your umbrella or by digging, also you must not touch the emerging baby turtles. Power water sports are not allowed in the area and no one is permitted at the beach after sunset.
There are boats with glass bottoms, from which you may watch the turtles in their natural environment. There are also small boats that take tourists to remote beaches. Take the opportunity to visit Marathonissi island, where the beach is also a reproduction area of the Caretta turtle.
Shopping
You will find a very comprehensive market at Kalamaki. There are money exchange agencies, bakeries, gift-shops, jewelries and leatherwear shops. The gift shops offer the perfect gifts to take back home, like jewelry, leatherwear, handbags, miniature Caretta turtles, pottery and sweets made from honey and almonds, like mandolato and pasteli.
Nightlife
Nightlife at Kalamaki is relatively quiet, in comparison to Laganas. Nevertheless, there are many taverns and restaurants to choose from at Kalamaki.
